Agal Making

The agal, a symbol of dignity and identity in Arabian culture, has adorned the heads of men across the region for generations. Beyond its functional role of securing the ghutra or shemagh, the agal embodies a rich tapestry of history and craftsmanship

Crafted by skilled artisans, the agal’s creation involves meticulous processes. Natural materials, such as black goat hair or fine wool, are spun and twisted using traditional tools, including the Dazqa and Malaf, to achieve the desired thickness and resilience. The process includes stages like ‘Kasrat al-Egal,’ where the ends are joined and knotted, and ‘Tadris,’ involving stitching and covering, culminating in a piece that balances both form and function.

In contemporary settings, agal-making workshops provide participants with an immersive experience into this heritage craft. Engaging in the tactile experience of twisting threads and understanding the symbolism behind each knot provides a deeper appreciation for the agal’s role in cultural expression. These sessions have become esteemed features in cultural festivals and corporate events, offering attendees a hands-on connection to Saudi Arabia’s enduring traditions.
